who is tomoko, actually?

Tomoko Visha'dai was born in northern Vethraan, in the old northern district of Laskheir. Laskheir was one of the few areas where the remnants of ancient practices were still done behind closed doors.

Her lineage carried the unmistakable traits of Vethraanic "nobles": the animalistic traits. For her specifically, she had fox-like ears, tails, heightened senses, and a psionic predisposition sharper than most populations.

However, the traits nowadays are never a symbol of nobility, just a reminder of what the region had once practiced: violent culling, which accelerated evolution, adapted over time into a scar for those who had survived it.

Tomoko grew up at the intersection of two pressures. On one hand, Vethraan celebrated its bloodlines with pride. Old stories spoke of ancestors who endured the psionic storms during the early epochs of the world's instability. On the other hand, the entirety of Caldrith regarded such mutations with anger, especially as scientific consensus slowly acknowledged that all humans could theoretically mutate with sufficient psionic exposure through an "imprinting" process.

At sixteen, she was swept into the Caldrith State Institute's aptitude program after exhibiting resonance stability well above baseline and was given a new name, "Zoe Katelyn." She didn't seek to be taught, but the skills she offered made her useful. She excelled in engineering, specifically field harmonics, and gained a reputation for herself at the institute. What she lacked socially she compensated for with tenacity. Her peers often joked that she could "hear machinery breathe," though none realised how literal her sensitivity was; the Spire reactors' low-frequency hum often left her lying awake at night, hands pressed over her ears.

She never felt at home in the Institute. Her traits made her stand out in a way she couldn't ever hide. Something akin to imposter syndrome. Whether it was teachers watching her, students whispering. Some envied the mutation. Others feared it. She learned to shrink inward, to hide and spend her time when people weren't around. Maintenance shafts and deserted labs.

When tensions between Caldrith and the emergent Fractureborn sect boiled over, Tomoko was assigned to a field relay installation outside Velenkai. It was supposed to be routine. Instead, her team was ambushed by a splinter group conducting pressure raids to "liberate psionics from state control."

Tomoko barely escaped, dragging two engineers with her through a collapsed service tunnel. She watched three others get pulled into a collapsing psion storm, their bodies being bent in ways that left images in her head that nobody should ever have to witness.

The Institute's response was simple: "Unfortunate and Unavoidable." She was given a few days leave, and that was that. This caused something in Tomoko to snap and abandon the name they gave her.

Her escape brought her into contact with the Virelia Foundation, a place she had only heard rumours about at the time.

Director Lira Malken personally reviewed her transfer papers. Tomoko expected the usual micro-aggressions, the quiet flinch at her ears or tail or questions about mutation thresholds. None came. Lira read her entire file in silence, then looked her in the eyes and simply said: "If you want to build something better, we have space for your hands."

Tomoko was stationed aboard the Spindle, a wandering sanctuary, research hub, and rescue carrier. It was rough, unpolished, constantly under maintenance due to the strain of hundreds of refugees and a patchwork infrastructure, but it felt more like home than any place she'd ever lived.

During a field survey in the northern Velenkai lattices, a resonance spike ruptured a stabiliser scaffold, sending half the team into free-fall. Her actions during the mission not only saved the team — it bought the final seconds needed for the stabiliser grid to reboot and prevent a region-wide collapse. This gave her the designation "Kestrel."
